The eagerly-anticipated annual SSAFA 10K took place last weekend with a record number of runners lacing up their trainers to take part in the gruelling run.
The route, which starts on the easy running track in Happy Valley, soon toughens up for even the most seasoned of runners as it winds its way up a prolonged rugged track into the hills of Episkopi. The course then takes a number of twists and turns before the final downhill stretch which leads back to the finish line in Happy Valley.
This year’s race was split into four categories, male, female and male and female veterans (40 years old and over). The overall winner was James Gibson, who defended his title from 2013 by crossing the line in 39.13 minutes– almost a minute under the magic 40 minute marker .
Rounding out the top three were Iaonya Limbu and Mohan Gurung, in times of 39.16 and 42.17 respectively.
In the woman’s category, last year’s champion Julia Tulley stormed to victory and successfully defended her title in a time of 46.22 – a full 10 minutes ahead of her nearest challengers, Judie Blackadder and Linzi Fielding, who endured their own personal battle with only 22 seconds separating second placed Judie to her rival.
In the men’s veterans category for over 40s, the race was won by Khadka Gurung who came home in 46.34 and the in the female veteran’s category it was Alison Lent who took first place in a time of 59.57.
